What the rule actually asks

Transfer of residence relief under Council Regulation (EC) No 1186/2009 turns on where your normal home has been. Not your passport, not your nationality. You need to show that your normal home was outside the EU for at least 12 continuous months before the move.

For someone who has been in Britain on and off, visiting family regularly, that is a question of records rather than of memory.

Keep these before you pack them

• British tenancy agreements or mortgage statements covering the period.
• Council tax records in your name.
• Payslips or an employment letter showing continuous work.
• Utility bills at the British address.
• A dated inventory of the load, which you need anyway.

Put them in a folder that travels with you, not in a box on the lorry. The one document customs asks for is always the one in the box.

Access across the area

Ostrava movers know the area well and access is broadly good, better than the Bohemian cities. Roads here were built for industrial traffic, much of the housing is post war or prefabricated with lifts, and there is usually somewhere for a large vehicle to stop. The exceptions worth flagging on your enquiry are the older streets in central Ostrava and village addresses out towards the Beskydy foothills, where a smaller vehicle may be needed for the last stretch.

Ostrava is the furthest of our Czech destinations from the Channel. Your belongings cross by ferry or tunnel, drive through Germany, cross the whole width of the Czech Republic and arrive in the far east of the country. There is no sea leg at any point, and the extra mileage is a real line in the quote rather than a rounding.

That also makes a shared load more attractive here than it is closer to the border. If your dates can move, sharing space on a part load, which American moving companies call a consolidated shipment, saves more on this journey than on a shorter one.

And volume, as always

Quoted in cubic metres, measured at survey. Housing here is generally more spacious than in central Prague, so people arriving from Britain less often need to leave things behind. That is a genuine advantage of moving to this part of the country and it usually shows up as a simpler, single delivery.

Ask for the quote split between transport, handling and packing. A single total is impossible to query when the invoice lands.
